As I recall - it is necessary to remove the circlip in order to remove the pin which connects the pedal to the cylinder. Once the pin is free the pedal swings out of the way and you can negotiate the cylinder out of the car after loosening the hydraulic line from inside the engine bay and the 2 12mm ? bolts holding it to the firewall. I did the job on an '87 which had no knee bolster so access was relatively easy - I placed my toolbox outside the door so I could sit on it and lay on my back looking up into the pedal area - it's really not that bad of a job. good luck!
