I don't remember off the top of my head what the rating of the fuse and wiring going to the cigarette lighter is, but it should be sufficient for gauge power. Most gauges take almost no power.
Alternately, you could run a dedicated wire as you mentioned. I did that when I installed a new CD player in mine, because the prior owner had done some electrical surgery that was less than perfect.
If you have a Bentley manual, take a look at the appropriate electrical diagram. Just be sure to use an ignition switched power source so that the power goes off to the gauges when you shut down the car.
