Often the seal on an old gas cap doesn't work quite right and you get the gas smell when driving.
They're relatively cheap to replace. It's been a few years since I replaced one, but my memory is that it cost something like $8 for a Stant cap at a chain auto parts store.
This isn't to say that this is the only thing that would give a gas smell, but it's pretty common.
PS My wife smells gas fumes better than I do, too.
