Weird no-start repair

My `87 900T wouldn't start after a shopping trip today. The car and weather were both hot. We went back to it a couple hours later and it still didn't start. I pulled a plug wire off to check for spark and it started on the 3 remaining cylinders. I put the plug wire back on and drove off.
So what was wrong? My theory: Pulling the wire was a red herring. I think the battery is weak, it got a bit flooded trying to start while hot, and had to crank a bit after cooling down to blow some excess fuel out of the cylinders. Other ideas?
One more question: On my `84 8 valve with CIS, when it doesn't start (rare) you floor the accelerator and keep cranking for 30 seconds or so. Does the same approach work with LH injection? I've never had to find out because I haven't had starting issues with it before.
Thanks, Carl
