new ones can be flexed 180 degrees without problem. used ones in the condition your's is are often difficult to get out as they don't want to be bent the little bit necessary to clear the tabs that hold them in place. Would I remove a valve cover to replace the guide? No. But if I'm in there and it's like hard plastic I would do it. It's a couple of bucks. You may be surprised at the noise difference.
I also tend to replace all of the washers etc, like the one for the chain tensioner. Likewise pretty cheap and I'd rather have less oil leaks when done than more than when I started.
All stuff my buddy the saab master mechanic made me do, or he gave me the "you aren't doing it right" look.
I used to race dirt bikes in the high desert and had a mentor then too. Learned to 1) stock spares, 2) replace questionable parts, 3) use a torque wrench and lookup the values, and 4) get the correct tool to do the job.
I'm sure I cut some corners, but the items I can do without question I do, without question. I sound like Yogi on the AFLAC commercial!
