I wouldn't think that is out of line, except he paid way to much for it to begin with and so might get offended. He obviously overvalues the car based on what he paid. You might provide some "education" for him with KBB, Edmunds, NADA pricing, as well as some current sales prices from here, autotrader and other sources.
Just a data point. I sold my '87 900s, 150K miles last year for $1000, great condition in/out and ran perfectly. It did have a little rust on it though, but fairly new tires, exhaust, radiator, and many other new/rebuilt parts. I felt it was a fair price, I was asking $1200.
I would think he'd be very lucky to get $750 for it and $500 is good.
