there's a nylon gear in the speedometer that drives the odometer and trip odometer. After a decade or so (depending on your climate), the gear shrinks, cracks, and doesn't hold onto the shaft well, so it slips. The odometer on my '88 900S, died at 214k miles, but on my last 2, one died at 86K and the other died at 107k. All 3 were northern cars.
It's fairly straightforward to repair, but a real PITA to remove to fix. There's a fellow who sells new replacement gears.
