Seems like you've narrowed it down to being knock sensor related. It could be anything that is falsely tripped the knock sensor, including random electrical emissions or mechanical noise it's picking up from the engine. I suppose it could be an APC box that has somehow grown too sensitive, but I'm not exactly sure how that would happen....
No advice short of start throwing parts at it, really...
