SRS light / Steering wheel play

Hey guys, very excited that I've just picked up a super clean 1990 Talladega Red SPG. This is my 3rd SPG and 4th 900T and I am psyched, also my 1st one w/ ABS or SRS. Let the games begin right?
Picked up the car yesterday, no SRS light. During 5 hr drive home I noticed a bit of play in the steering column/shaft -- ie you can move it up / down a bit. Hmm. Never before encountered on a 900 before but I figured something loose somewhere.
Anyway, today, get in the car, SRS light blinks for 5 mins, then steady, repeats every time car is started. Hmm. REsearched the board and think I need new steering shaft bushing/sleeve/ballbearing/lockring, etc.. to correct the play. Then replace the clockspring which I think I may have actually damaged "testing" the play in teh wheel?
AM I way off base in thinking that this play in the wheel caused maybe the clockspring to go? Ie -- anyone have evidence that attributes this clockspring giving up the ghost to play in the wheel due to bad bushings? (ie only on airbag cars)
Thanks
