The article is fairly accurate. The designs were not fixed during the production years. The headgaskets go frequently (much less when using Mercedes coolant), the headliners sag because the foam deteriorates with time, and the trannies went without a design change during that time. Many of these problems did not manifest during the production years, but in the decade after. Almost any car with a cast iron block and aluminum cylinder head has head gasket problems because the 2 metals react differently to heat. Some mfgrs have gone to using multi-layered steel gaskets.
Headliner foam only lasts so long, so expect that problem to recur every 10 years.
The 5 speed trannies are not too bad, I hate their automatics, a failure waiting to happen.
The AC? The AC is an add-on after thought in these cars. i don't think the need for AC is all that strong in Sweden. It is strange that a car engineered such as a Saab felt the need to mount a smooth running alternator on rubber bushings, but solid mount the shock load AC compressor, kinda bass-ackwards. You can almost melt metal with the heating system, which I'm sure is needed in Sweden.
However, you may not find a better car to drive in winter weather, at any price. These cars are like an enclosed ski-doo, and run circles around most SUVs.
