If it's the pipe that I'm thinking of, the fuel filler assembly has a small nipple at the bottom of the filler neck. It drains the small hole right below the gas cap, through a small-diameter hose that exits behind the right rear tire.
You'll see the nipple on this picture. The nipple is less sturdy than the rest of the assembly and it tends to break. On almost every 900 that I've looked at in the pick-n-pulls, that nipple has broken off flush with the bottom of the filler assembly. So, when you get some gas drips when filling, it drains into the trunk area.
FWIW, I've found that gas fillers from '85 onwards tend to shrink and crack (and have that nipple break), whereas '84 and earlier filler assemblies don't crack. SAAB must've made a supplier change for the '85 model year and saved a few cents per unit by using a different, less durable plastic for the filler.
I replaced the cracked and broken filler assembly on my '89 with one that I pulled off from an '84. The original one on the '89 was broken to the point that the filler door would have fallen off in another day or 2. The one from the '84 is still happily working in the Georgia heat 2-1/2 years later.
As always, YMMV.
