1992 900S CV - front brake caliper question...help!

I'm in deep on the job of changing the front brake pads that were at the wear limit on my 92 900S CV.
On the right side, I got the caliper piston partially compressed, but it still needs to go another 1/4" or so to allow enough clearance for the PBR/Axxis metalmaster front brake pads I ordered from Eeuroparts. I am NOT using cross-drilled rotors.
The overall thickness of the pads with backer is about 5/8" and the thickness of the existing rotor is about 7/8", so with the two pads plus the rotor, I need at least 2 and 1/8" plus a little more for clearance. The piston and caliper opening is about 2" now. And the caliper piston was pretty tough to compress so far (I used, very carefully, a metal ruler and vice grip to do the compressing.
How do I get this caliper piston compressed the rest of the way, or are these pads too thick?
Thanks for suggestions and help, as always,
Todd inMA
