The current generation 2.4l (not 2.2l) turbo is a pretty kickass motor. It isn't terribly refined, but it makes LOTS of power all over the place. I suspect even a modified c900 would have trouble keeping up with stock Neon SRT4 or PT Turbo. 230hp and 245 lb ft is what they're rated, but like a lot of cars in the category, off-the-showroom-floor dyno numbers show they're probably making closer to 250hp. That's a pretty big power gap in a car that has not much of a weight disadvantage and a pretty substantial transmission loss advantage... we're losing 20-25% to our gearboxes, they're losing 12-15%... And, with a Mopar upgrade, 300hp is a factory option...
The old 2.2l turbos came in several flavors over the years, but the last generation Daytona IROCs were pumping 225hp... completely respectable, especially back in the day. I dunno that they were much to look at, perhaps that's why they were often overlooked performance cars... LeBarons, Daytonas, Shadow/Lancers, and Shelby/VVT versions of most of them. A Shelby CSX would be a pretty good sleeper these days...
The Caravan and other K-cars ran the Mitsubishi 2.6l turbo, which was more or less a POS. Lots of power and torque (which is what happens when you start with a 2.6l motor...) but not the best reliability stats and, from my Conquest TSi owning buddy, not exactly easy to pump up, either...
Anyway, watch out for the Mopar turbos - they've been working with them almost as long as Saab... :)
