No experience in that type of problem, but looking at Bentley it seems to me like Ground G1 (headlights) is the one at the radiator crossmember; Ground G8 is the Instrument Panel Ground (behind it, for High Beam Indicator blue light).
Other Grounds are G6 at Main Fuse/Relay Panel; G25 at Gearbox (under shifter console I think).
Those are the grounds listed in Bentley Headlights area for 1991 and later. Don't know year you are working on. Could you look for G8 thru speaker panel?
Most likely you've checked, but is the wiring around the headlights (and connectors) in original condition? Sometimes people install bulbs which draw a bit too much current, and things happen. Good luck!.
