Radio kaput on 89 - Any Ideas?

This one's got me stumped. Battery died on 89 SPG which my dad is taking care of in Florida since I have no garage (ie its in his garage). Dad bought new battery. Hooked the damn thing up backwards for about 5 seconds, so he claims. Only noticed it when he saw smoke (!!!!!!!!!!) coming from "around the alternator" and that the terminals weren't fitting right.
He called me right away, I was irritated esp since he's an electrical engineer. Had visions of fried ECUs, etc.
But alas, car was fine, started right up, it's been 2500 miles w/ zero problems. But the orig clarion radio stopped working. Fuses checked out OK. I swapped out w/ another same clarion unit (new I bought at saab convention in 99). Turned it on, antenna moved for about 1 sec, radio lights came on... then antenna went back down, radio went blank. Swapped this radio into another car, not working. Put orig radio in another car, fried too. Fuses in cage and elsewhere are A-OK.
So basically I've fried 2 radios or otherwise rendered them useless. I'm getting switched / unswitched power at the appropriate key positions at the harness.
Does anyone have an idea what in the world happened here? I'm stumped.
Thanks
