Is C900 the pinnacle of saabness?

Obviously, that's a rhetorical question. The answer is yes.
I often wonder if Saab could have ridden the success of the 99 and 900
turbo models to equal or better BMW. In hindsight, it was possible.
It would have taken massive infusion of capital, inspired leadership
and brillian marketing. The engineering talent was there. The following
was there.
But, the turbo model was itself an accident, and the move upmarket from
basic 99 to luxury 900 was not based on systematic marketing strategy.
So, when Turbo innovation gave Saab an infusion of cachet and good
press, Saab just lost out on the short window of opportunity to achieve
the type of success that BMW has enjoyed for so long.
I think C900 was the pinnacle of Saabness, but I don't think the Turbo
was the top of the pinnacle. I think the NA was the very top of Saabness.
Turbo was a happy accident.
