when you say the control arm cracking im thinking that as the lowwer control arm broke,
and the axle slid out of the inner driver,

this happend with me but at the time i was backing up i had the music so loud the people in the next state could hear it. so there was no way i heard the crack of the lower control arm, after i finished backing up (with the arm broke at this point) i put the car in drive (1st gear)and crancked the wheel in the other direction and hit the gas, i got about 10 feet untill the axle came out of the inner driver,
now with me driving the car i felt the car slowing down as it should be going faster so what i did was (turned down the music) and gave it more gas, i hear the inner driver spinning over or just on the out-side of the tri-pod bearing, in my case i shut the car down, but im sure if i kept giving it gas it wouldnt be to long untill i ruined or spun the tri-pod bearing apart.
as to why the axle pulled out of the driver,
when the wheel (road wheel) folded, bottom out. it gives the amount of room to pull the axle out.
when working on the car the same thing is done to replace inner drivers and tri-pod bearings, this leaves the hub and the upper control arm with the spring still intact, (henc. no spring compressors needed to replace the inner drivers or to even pull the axle.)

now if this happend (axle sliping out of place) with out the control arm
snaping lets take a look at the set up that was dont on the car

back in the day around 87 and before the tripods and inner drivers where a tad smaller than the 87 and later
if it was you have a smaller tri-pod for the 91 large driver the tri-pod would just flop around inside the driver untill the driver broke our the axle came out.
so i would think to point at the size miss match
(info of the pre and post 87 sizes, all thanks goes to cmyles)
