On the tranny side of the rod is a hole for the taper pin. The coupling attaches to the rod at that fixed location. Then you'll have to attach and adjust the 2nd longer shift rod to that coupling. How I do it is - I put the tranny in 4th geargear (short tranny rod is pushed into the box), the stick shift will be in a vertically centered rearward position. How far to the rear is up to you and your shifting comfort. The vertical centering is important though. Find a way to keep the stick in that position or have someone hold it there, then tighten the 13mm nut on the coupling below. Be sure the nut is tightened firmly or else the coupling may slip, causing the stick shift to rotate.
