’89 900i:engine turns over but doesn't start

Hi all, enjoying saabnet a lot, but this is my first post (might have posted it twice by accident)…
I’ve got a problem with an ’89 900i (16v, non-turbo). The problem: the engine turns over and has spark but does not start.
I had been having problems with the headlight relay (lights not working on low beam) and had just sprayed some water dispersant on the contacts of the relay, jiggled it up and down and the lights started working. But then no internal combustion (although I had spark).
The relay that I had “adjusted” had a contact that was a bit burnt/melted (but headlights still working). Then a fuse for the ECU relay (and the rear demister and other components?) kept blowing when the ignition was switched on.
Is this likely to be due to a short circuit somewhere? I’ve read through a lot of the posts and is seems that the ECUs in the 89 900s were a bit dodgy, but we had ours replaced less than a year ago (used/reconditioned ones are pretty expensive in Australia). I’ve searched through the Haynes manual (I don’t have access to a Bentleys) but with not much joy so far.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Also, we are thinking of adding a 1994 Saab 900s V6 2.5L auto to the family – any recommendations for or against this model? We’ll be keeping the 89 900i (I hope).
TIA
Dave
