Both of you should try spraying some penetrating oil in the AIC (air idle control) solenoid (your idle speed valve) to keep it from sticking. If that doesn't work, clean the gunk out of your throttle bores, fix your vacuum leaks and see if your fuel pressure regulators are leaking internally. You'd be surprised what a couple of new intake manifold grommets and some vacuum hose will do to these cars.
If in doubt, why not pull the codes from your computer? You said the CEL comes on, meaning codes are being stored.
