As I recall ( it's been awhile), on my '86, I removed the bolt holding the lap end of the belt to the floor by the door and the bolt and trim holding the belt to the B pillar. I then slid the belt through the opening in the side panel while removing the panel after removing the screw holding the plastic trim piece so the trim was loose. I left the belt attached at the spool end.
