CD technology has changed drastically over the last 15 years. Remember when CD players first came out and they had that 'edgy' sound? Think crappy DAC's and awful timing clocks.
I would suggest getting rid of the old stuff, including the equalizer. Replace the unit with a good head unit, put an empty DIN in the equalizer bay.
Put new 4 inchers in the dash (that's what fits) and new 6.5 round in the rear sides (the originals were 4x10). Round speakers sound better - Period.
If your budget allows for it, I'd add a separate amplifier (your saab has one under the rear seat which powered the rears - but I'd get rid of it - it too is 15 years old and there is much better sound to be had at decent prices).
If you are really going to go for it, I'd do a subwoofer somewhere - I am currently debating this for my 93TC as the sub enclosure takes up precious space in the trunk.
Crutchfield give some good guidance on what will fit your car - the polk speakers are a good bet - not too pricey and they are not scratchy in the high end like many car audio speakers are.
Have fun and good luck!
