Knocking sound under load, obove 3K rpm

I have an 1985 Saab SPG

It has this frustrating barely audible but distinct 'knocking sound' under even slight load when above 3000 rpm in all gears. I use premium gas (hightest grade), have had the timing checked three times by 3 different saab techs, changed the distributor cap, spark plugs and HT cables but to no avail. It also makes the sound in neutral when revving above 3K and is again barely audible. When driving up a steep incline and really stepping on it, I heard it really knocking especially when shifting into 4th and 5th. Is this normal? If not, what could the knocking be other than the timing or the gas? Bad vacuum advance device ontop of the rotor?
