distributor plug broken, can I swap?

I'm just finishing up doing a head gasket job on my '89 turbo. When I was taking it apart, the plug on the side of the distributor just fell off in my hands, which doesn't sound like it's that uncommon. I could see the previous owner had problems with it at some point as the wires were held together inside the distributor with black tape. I wasn't too worried as I had a good distributor from my '86 turbo and I thought they were the same. Ok, so today I'm putting everything back together and one of the last things was installing the distributor. Hmmmm, plug wires are 90 degrees off...ok...I'll move them. Oh, oh....the plug is NOT the same.
Can I use the remnants of the old pieces and splice it so I can use the '86 distributor in the '89?
If so, the wires are different colors...how do they match up?
