Fuel pump noise Posted by Saana88 [Email] [Profile/Gallery]

Just this morning I started hearing a buzzing noise out of the back of the car. The car is an 8 valve '88 900 with 214k. After a little more investigation, I have found that the noise is only apparent after the car warms up, and it has been very cold here lately. The noise is definitely related to the fuel pump because when I turn the key on two clicks and the pump runs for a second or so, the noise happens in that time. Even more interesting was when I found out tonight that the noise goes away or gets louder depending on where you apply pressure to the bottom-of-the-trunk plywood cover. I have a full tank of gas and put a bottle of gas line antifreeze in tonight with no change.
Is my pump/prepump about to die?
Is it just noisy because it's old like me?
Is it just some sort of vibration that's going to happen when it's colder that the witches' pieces outside but after the interior begins to warm up?
The car hasn't missed a beat regardless of ambient temperature, engine speed, fuel pump load, or anything like that. I just renewed my roadside club so I should be okay if I end up stranded, but I really hope that does not happen!
I'm not crazy, in fact I have an audio recording I can e-mail to you if you want. This is a new noise, not the usual main pump noise.
