One time (only one ill-timed slip on the ice) of needing them and they have paid for themslves, IMO. My studded tires are usually worn out over three seasons, mostly on pavement where I did not need them. Yes, they wore the pavement, but my gas taxes pay for that damage. How often did I need them? It is hard to count, due to the fact they give you superior traction WHEN you need them. When driving in snow and ice, you often don't have the opportunity to stop just before a shady, icy corner to chain up for a 200 yard stretch. My SAABs have always done very well with or without studs, with careful driving, on snow and ice. Yet, driving over 9000 - 11000 foot passes while skiing in Colorado (like where CMyles lives in Silverton,CO) will make you appreciate that extra measure of traction and safety provided by studded tires. YMMV
