the usualy way this happens is either something was disconnected and/or reconnected with the battery still in. the system thinks fault. the other usual suspect is the clock spring in the steering wheel. that's the component that allows a circuit to get to the airbag even though you are turning the wheel from lock to lock. It's a special deal that makes constant connection without any type of wiper contact such as the horn ring uses for the horn. It has a brass ring that a spring loaded contact rides upon to keep contact. somewhat crude but effective! The Airbag needs a consistant reliable and permatent connection. Any deviation and it's either going to think the unit has a fault, or set it off! The only ohter one I've seen is if the car gets a sufficent jolt from the side, or someone smacks the sensor on the fenderwell, and that will also setoff the SRS fault light.
Basically if you (or a shop) didn't remove anything with the battery attached... it's about a 95% clockspring deal.
