Rod knock?

After spending some serious dollars to redo my exhaust system from the turbo back (Stock setup, 1988T) I discover that the rattling sound that comes on at about 3K rpm did not go away. I thought it was a loose baffle in the exhaust. Turns out my Indy is now saying it is possible it is rod knock.
I did a search and see that it could also be timing chain and loose tensioner, as a matter of fact it does have a rattling chain kind of sound. I can also feel it transmitted thru the clutch pedal.
If it is rod knock?, How many miles can I put on this car before having to tear the engine down?
