Somewhat related tranny question - my brother is interested in an 88' 900 SPG w/a little over 100k...the car seems well kept & just had the tranny rebuilt because it wouldn't stay in 3rd gear. The current owner was nice enough to provide a copy of the $2000 repair invoice, which showed the only parts replaced were 3rd gear & a related 'kit' which totaled aprox. $800 with the remainder being labor to remove & repair the transaxle.
This was verified by contacting the repair facility (Saab indie) who said the rest of the tranny was fine & there was no need to replace any other parts. I think the repair shop has it's collective head up it's a$$ & that if you are going to yank a transmission (regardless of reason), you ought to overhaul the whole shebang...ESPECIALLY the pinion bearing! How much more would it have cost to just drop in an Erikson rebuilt trans?
The fellow is asking a LOT for an (admittedly nice & one owner) SPG w/a transmission that wasn't really rebuilt. From my experience, those pinion bearings tend to crap out between 90k & 150k, average 120k. I have found this to be fairly universal for all years, even the 89' & newer trannys fortified w/larger bearings. Heres the rub, the car is on on the West coast & we are on the East coast...so there's no way to take a test drive. I feel the owner got screwed by his mechanic & while thats' unfortunate, it's his problem. I guess my question is "whats the car worth?" Thoughts anyone?
