My first introduction to the DI is at fault sent me in a similar direction. I was having an odd occurence with my 1992 9000CDT auto. As I explained to the service write, and then to the tech, as you were at a constant speed on the freeway... the gas pedal would start to go to the floor, ever so slightly, and the car would accelerate... and then it would resume the previous state. I remmarked that it was like putting on the cruise control, having pedal pulled away from your foot as the system accelerated. It would do this a little bit, and then not, and then at a random interval do it again.

So I left them to their designs. Later that day they called, yep it was the DI, my car had the "old style" DI with the pigtail coming out of the DI and going down the side of the block to another connector. "known problem with old styple DI", needed a new style DI and the wire loom to allow it to use the connector directly on the DI.

So I paid my $550, ouch! and drove down the freeway. Didn't get two miles and it's doing my symptom again! So I call the dealer, head back to them. and ask the two questions you always need to ask. DID YOU TEST DRIVE AND EXPERIENCE THE SYMPTOMS I RELATED? No was the answser. DID YOU TEST DRIVER AFTER THE FIX AND NOTE THAT THE SYMPTOMS WERE GONE? No was the answer. Ok, put all my old stuff back in, now.

The problem, as many 9000 owners may recognize, was in the electronic throttle body.

The dealer did make good by giving me installation of the TB free, a large "good will" discount on the TB, and working some paper work out on the DI to make it about $150. The didn't want to reinstall the old one.

The moral of this story is, for odd noises and activities take the guy on a test drive!
