I have a 1986 non-turbo, manual tranny 900, probably 200+ K actual miles (judging by the extreme wear in the clutch pedal bushing/pin, whole assembly since replaced), which still runs fine (23 mpg), looks quite presentable, and is a pleasure to drive.
Problem is that when vehicle and outside temp are relatively warm, I usually cannot shift into fifth. Doesn't grind, just can't seem to find the slot. No difficulties ever with reverse.
I had this happen some time ago and the problem went away went I replaced the old tranny oil.
Should also say that I once had a complete failure of the front engine mount, with the transaxle actually resting then on the light aluminum cross bars wouldn't shift then either into fifth. (Drove It that way for a hundred miles before I realized the extent of the problem.)
Replaced the front engine mount (old one had evidently failed before and was welded back together by a previous owner, before both ears broke off), and then shifting into fifth was OK again. So apparently the orientation of the transaxle relative to the car body shift lever is also a factor.
No obvious failure in the left and right side engine mounts, but there's lots of wierd clanking noises when I go over a bump, or steer hard at low speed. Have replaced about half of the ball joints (but not the bushings), the others still seem OK, and there's no obvious slack in the steering linkages, and handling overall is reasonably precise. About 40k mi. on the replacement shocks, replaced again all the shock bushings about 15k mi ago.
I wonder if there's a heavier-weight gearbox oil that I might try using? Like I say, shifting into fifth is ordinarily easy and normal when outside temps are low and the engine temp is not very warm. No tranny unusual noises, and the failed shifting into fifth comes from just not seeming to find the slot, rather than any grinding or gear gnashing.
Have gotten enormous assistance from this board earlier, for which I once again express my gratitude to you all out there.
