My 1992 900Tc does exactly the same thing, and it's driving me batty. I've never had a car do this. Most of what's on the car is new, and that which isn't is or has largely been swapped with known good parts. I can't tell whether it's a fuel or ignition issue, or some mechanical issue (vacuum leaks, etc.), but it's oh-so-annoying.

The NTC and O2 sensor are new, every bushing and grommet in the intake tract is new, the vacuum hoses are all new (and I went through ALL of them this weekend), injectors are new 24lb, plugs/wires/cap/rotor have less than 5k on them. Same for the air & fuel filters. I have replaced the distributor with a spare, then a known-good one. I've tried three AMMs - I'm going to swap with the known-good one in my SPG next weekend. Nothing changes the behavior.

I'm currently hoping is a plugged exhaust system - that is the final component that's earmarked for upgrade/replacement as the current one has definitely had it. I should pull the plugs and re-gap them, and I am going to try another ignition control module. After that, I am completely out of ideas... Well, not quite, I suppose a compression test wouldn't hurt (though the head gasket is also 10k old, and the head is a 2.1l with $500 put into it...).

LH 2.4 cars have "decent" CEL subsystems - they will pretty readily detect when things are out of whack, but if problems are sudden and intermittent and then go back to normal, they often won't trigger one. It's definitely possible to have a borderline O2 or AMM (or anything else) that won't set off CEL... In other words, lack of CEL doesn't inherently mean much... :)
