There are basically three wires to the alternator. One ground, one fat red wire to the battery and another smaller wire for the low speed excitation circuit.
The alt will self excite above about 2000 engine rpm but will not maintain without this little wire/voltage. The idiot light on the dash is also part of this circuit...a burnt out idiot light will also behave exactly the same as the broken wire.
This broken wire happened to me about three months ago on my 87 900T.
I had had the front suspension bushings replaced and the tech had evidently broke off the wire at the terminal on the alternator. Car died within a couple miles from the shop on the way home. The car could be jumped but would die quickly. I finally figured out that the car would run if I kept rpm above 2000 (tough with an automatic...have to kick into neutral at every light and keep it in second most of the time around town on the way home).
This wire is also held on the alternator by a quick disconnect female terminal. Chances are the wire broke at the terminal.
