I assume you mean the lower control arm (that's the one that most often develops a crack)... it's pretty easy to remove and replace with a new one. I'm not real skilled at dyi, but I managed to replace one in a few hours. It's just a matter of putting the car up on stands, unloading the front suspension, removing the lower shock mount and ball joint bolts to free the arm from the steering knuckle, then undoing the 8 or so big bolts that hold the A-arm on the lower body pan. And yes, it is common for the axle to pull out and make a mess if the A-arm broke while you were moving, or if you tried to drive the car even a few feet after it broke. If that is the case you may have torn the boot, or incurred other damage...
