Thanks for the suggestions. I'll take a look tomorrow, in the daylight.
If I understand correctly, the APC solenoid is mounted above the radiator (and is likely where the noise is coming from), but the (probable) reason that the APC solenoid is chattering is something to do with the pressure transducer, which is located inside the passenger compartment, behind the knee bolster.
Is the APC gauge run off a different input, or should I expect to see that needle behaving strangely (I didn't look)?
To reply to Saana88: the noise is not related to engine speed; it happens when the car is standing still (parking brake on); it does happen every time the brake pedal is pressed; and it's a manual trans. I really doubt it's the sway bars or the motor mount.
