heater control light knob removal

when adjusting the heater control light the knob spins freely. The lights in the heater are off and are now stuck off. I think something is disconnected on the back of the knob, however the knob doesn't seem to come out, I'd hate to think I have to remove the facia to get to it, is there another way?
Thanks for any help
