Cadillac? Hyundai? OK well, thanks for the info on that ugly Cad and that, well, Hyundai, but clearly as a Saab guy I have no interest in either of those.
I think I can answer my own question here: Yes, it is entirely possible, however the amount of work needed as far as fabrication and planning are immense.
First of all, two identical motors need to be torn down and rebuilt by the same person to ensure that they are both putting out the same amount of power, or at least as close as possible. Every motor is different, and turbos vary more than N/As, so brand new or freshly rebuilt turbochargers would need to be used. Transmissions would also need to be rebuilt for the same reason.
Then the entire rear axle, fuel tank, subframe, and, well, everything would have to be removed from the eventual twin-engined car. The front suspension would have to be cut out of a donor car and put into place. Motor mounts, tranny mounts, all that other stuff would half to be somehow grafted onto the back end of a three door as well. Then you gotta put the motor, trans, and axels in the back.
Once you get it all in there, I can think of a few problems. One or two fuel pumps? Where to put the gas tank? Brakes? Seems like the smart thing to do would be have two master cylinders for brakes, front motor does front brakes, rear does rears. But would Saab's dual-diagonal circutry mess with this? Would it be better to used ABS or non-ABS cars? Shift linkage for the automatics? AC? Heater? Starting procedure? What if the heated seats stop working? Should you have one broken odometer, or two? Since the rear hatch would now effectively be a hood, would it best to make it open backwards in true C900 tradition?
Of course, here is the real problem with it: WHY???? The weight gain would make a 900 as portly as, well, a new car, and the T-37 Automatic with its lowly three gears would forever hold the thing back from being a true performance powerhouse. Plus, it will be thirstier than Boris Yeltson when he finally gets to that big open bar in the sky, and whatever custom made fuel cell you stick in there will be small, giving you the cruising range of an electric car without the smugness of thinking you are helping the environment.
My brain tells me stop thinking about this, but I think about it more often than I should and I can't get it off of my mind. My brain tells me that for the money/time/effort it would take to get this done, I could probably buy a new Subaru Impreza WRX STi and have money left over for an SPG and a 9000 Aero.
Ahh, but brains don't make decisions. Hearts do. My heart says, "What If?" What if it could be made to work with manuals? What if each motor was putting on 220, hell 250 HP? A 500 Horsepower, twin-turbo, eight cylinder Saab? What would that sound like? At least Twice as good and the silly single engined one I have now, right?
Yeah, I am losing my mind.
