I've always been successful using this method, and realistically if the ring lasts three times, that's not a big deal... how many times are you going to replace the pump in the car's lifetime?
One trick that also helps is to pry on the ring against the hole in the body to loosen the ring on the threads of the tank. The ring will deform quite a bit, and after going around its circumference a few times, it generally spins off much more easily.
