That does sound like classic pre-pump failure.
As to octane, the engine was designed to run on everything from 87 on up. At 87,you may or may not get full turbo boost.
In the 18 years since your engine was new, it has changed. Some parts of the engine get looser - rings wear, valves don't seat as well, etc. This leads to lower compression and less tendancy to knock. Some things increase the tendancy to knock - carbon build-up, sticky injectors, hot spots in the cylinders, vacuum leaks. Depending on that tug of war, your engine may require higher or lower octane to run on full performance. Only you and your particular engine know that. At some octane level, you'll get no knock and full turbo performance. Any higher octane, and there is not additional value - the boost doesn't increase, the fuel isn't any better.
As to your problem, it isn't octane level. If the APC detects knock, it'll dial back the turbo to base boost. And that is all it can do. If for some reason you were still knocking at that point, then the engine will knock. It won't shut down.
