RE a 93 TC with 120K miles. Can anyone describe the difference between valve lifter noise (as in they all make noise so maybe there is air trapped in the oil supply passages) and timing chain noise ( top guide in the valve cover has been replaced). I would describe the noise as a nice even mechanical "clattering". Sort of a soft diesel noise. On start up it often has a lifter noise that goes away when the oil pressure builds up. The remaining noise is less of a knocking noise. It seems to come and go but is there more often than not. It seems to be heard on the right (pass) side more than the left. Recently it went away for a short while after the engine reved to 5K. With any other engine, my call would be lifter noise but I don't have experience with chain driven camshafts. I know that it is difficult to accurately describe a noise in print but any help you could provide is appreciated.
