Combined two cars into one, eventually having to replace both the engine and tranny. About the closest I've come to giving up on one of these cars was when I emergency transplanted a new (used) engine, and (#1) it wouldn't start, and (#2) I had forgotten to remove the shift rod coupling before lowering and reconnecting all the engine components. Frustrated at not getting any spark, I crawled underneath to deal with the coupling taper pin issue. I tried everything and nothing I tried seemed to loosen that pin. Tired from several days and long hours of struggling with the whole job, I layed under the car thinking this was it, I've reached the end of my abilities, patience and care. I began thinking about plan B, which was to scrap this car and begin anew. Just get a new car and make payments like everyone else. Then I thought I'd first take a break and think about what to do, recheck some things and do some searching on this BB. If I came back without results, plan B would go into effect that afternoon with a call to the tow truck.
A check on the BB recommended the large nut and C-clamp method of removing the taper pin. So back under the car with an old c-clamp. Turning, tightening, turning, tightening, c-clamp bending, just about to break when POP, the pin finally released! That little step propelled me to continue on, and eventually I got the thing to start and was able to drive it up the hill, back to it's parking spot. I had to replace that replacement engine the following week, but that's another story. The point being that I've been there. Good work!
