The best advice I can give is to avoid the tempatation to just start throwing "most likely" parts at it. I have done this and wasted a lot of money (but have plenty of spare parts now!)
I would start by looking closely at the brittle hall sensor connector and wiring on the distributor. Its not to hard to take the entire sensor out and repair/replace the wiring and connector if its damaged, which could easily cause your symptoms. I even did it with the distributor still mounted to the head but you have to be careful not to lose springs and clips as you take them out of the distributor (they can go flying).
It could be a fuel system problem like the air meter. When mine went (92 turbo), I would get hesitation like you describe and blackened spark plugs. To diagnose it I backprobed the AMM connector with a voltmeter and watched it while I drove. Do the same thing with other fuel system components (O2 sensor, NTC coolant temp sensor etc) until you find something acting weird. The other thing I'm thinking is that if the prepump is going you could get some hesitation, but that would be related to your fuel level.
Good luck, I feel your pain. Ken
