Bob is right, the fuel pump turns off if there is no signal from the distributor that the engine is running. The codes might also be useful - they don't require any special tools to access.

Try reproducing the stumbling symptoms, then immediately turn off the car, coast to the side of the road, and look at the plugs. If they are black you are running rich. My own personal experience is you can't trust gut feelings on stuff like that. Usually you can't even tell ignition or fuel, let alone rich or lean.

If it is rich you need to check your fuel pressure regulator, air mass meter, and o2 sensor. Good luck, Ken
