A bad ground at the battery might do this, check that first, then try this:
It's a long shot, but the fan(s) could be ready to retire & drawing so much amperage that the alternator is requiring a lot of effort from the engine to keep it spinning, which will certainly sap a considerable amount of mechanical energy. If this is the problem, you'll hear a lot of squealing w/the belt loose & the charging light will probably come on. If this is not the problem, you've only lost 10 min. & you can check the alt. mount bushings while you're at it. Spin the fans manually (cool & hot...watch your fingers, if they come on you could loose em') to see if there is a lot of drag. There's likely a resistance spec. for the fans - anyone got a Bentley manual handy?
There could also be some relationship between the fans & the AC fuel enrichment circuit (if your car has this). This is just speculation mind you, but what if a diode (like a one way vacuum check valve, only for electrical current) someplace has crapped out & is allowing a current back flow...that could wreak havoc on the FI system. This is highly unlikely, but could prove deadly to your ECU & worth checking out.
