...I believe the 1984 also uses a pre-pump. When gas gets low a failing pre-pump can stall the car. Keep the tank topped up in order to prevent stalling. Then look up and order a new pre-pump after confirming that pre-pumps go back as far as 1984.
As far as cleaning the tank, you need to make a decision. You can do it in or out of the car. Out is more trouble but gets every little drop of crud as you can use a power washer and get all corners.
It is almost as good to clean with the tank in the car. You need to pull the fuel pump assembly and suck out all the gas that you can. Then you need to use several junk towels to to clean out the tank by reaching through the large fuel pump portal. Look up how to pull the fuel pump assembly on the BB as it requires special tools.
Playing with a gas tank is super dangerous!!! You need to have a friend stand by at all times with a chemical rated fire extinguisher and heavy blankets for smothering you if you light up. You need to disconnect the battery. You need to be nowhere near smokers/fire/bbq/electrical units/buzzers/etc... You need to wear protective glasses and old crappy clothes.
Either way you need to be prepared to smell like gasoline for 3 days.
Best,
C
