Hey. Same problem here on my 90 SPG. Literally. ONly when the trans seems to heat up after driving for awhile, 5th gear gate feels like it "closes" and I can no longer select the gear. My trans was completely rebuilt about 45K miles ago. They had gear oil (the smelly stuff) in my trans after that (not my choice was the PO) and it was dark and dirty.

To remedy I drained trans and changed to redline MTL. I also took apart, cleaned, relubed, adjusted my shifter. Next step I think is that I'm going to replace the dogbone / shifter shaft bushing. Also there's the rubber bushing and split plastic bushing in the forward part of hte shifter housing under the carpet. This was my initial suspicion; however, I gave it a very careful inspection when I took apart the shifter, and the thing looks like it was replaced pretty recently. Rubber is clean, good, no tears, solid. If this bushing goes out it can cause the shifter shaft to move side to side instead of rotate, which means no 5th gear.

That's been awhile, and the thing hasn't done it since. And PS, Redline MTL really helped alot with shifting quality. Specifically, a balky first gear and slight tendency to catch/grind when shifting quickly into 2nd. Both seem much better.

I'll keep you posted if it keeps occuring on mine. (of course it only does this when I'm 300 miles from home and I need to make it home fast)

I heard things like the 5th gear shaft is frozen, the pinion is going out, all that. But I still think it's fluid or shifter related (somehow).
