Steering column cage collapsed

I just took a run around the corner and next thing I know the steering wheel is practically in my lap! The collapsible cage right up under the wheel decided it wanted to crack and separate. Anybody ever seen this happen before?
This is an '84t with an EMS manual rack (which I love). Of course there is more effort required to turn the car around at low speeds, and I often use the wheel as a brace when hanging in on turns. With a fresh alignment, good rack and U-joint, this doesn't seem a likely occurrence.
This is a first-time job for me and don't want any surprises. U-joints are hard enough. Any pointers or tips for swapping in a new one from a parts car (85spg)?
Thanks,
Matt
