Check the fluid level and condition.
Kind of an odd problem though.
So it's fine until you stop, put it in park - then no-go until cooled back down? This is a wag, but maybe it's low, then fills up the converter, so when you stop, most of the fluid isn't where it needs to be. I think you'd have some issues while driving.
Check the fluid level and it should look like cranberry juice (color).
If it's gray - that could be clutch material and/or burnt fluid.
If it's full - then drop the front and rear pans. There is a magnet (or should be ) in the front pan. Clean everything up and wipe the pans down - if you get a bunch of gray, graphite looking stuff, that's the clutches - some is expected. A lot is bad.
Procedure to change the fluid - fill it up.
Start it.
Idle in park for 30 sec
Idle in reverse for 30 sec
Idle in drive for 30 sec
Now you've cycled fluid through everything.
drain - refill - do it again
you don't get fluid to drain out - so you have to do it several times.
So how do you know when you've changed most of the fluid?
Here's a fun math formula for you.
out = what you drained out
total = fluid capacity of the trans
repeat = how many times you repeat the process
% of dirty fluid still in the trans = (out/total)^repeat
I forget what the capacity is and you can measure what you drain out.
If this doesn't fix it - check the pressure.
If that checks out - rebuild time.
Or find someone that has one or two good ones laying around (like me).
I hope this helps - Carl
