New Stereo - Very Happy Posted by Justin VanAbrahams [Email] |
I waited a long time for this day, and everything worked out smashingly. I needed a new stereo for my convertible, and I settled on a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X591 primarily because it has a rear USB input and secondarily because it was $140 on Ebay - the head unit itself was $115, but there was $15 shipping and I opted for a $10 SquareTrade no-questions-asked 3-year warranty since you don't get Kenwood Excelon gear for $115 from authorized resellers, and that means no Kenwood warranty. Whatever - the SquareTrade warranty is better and longer anyway!
The stereo took one week to arrive, which is excellent, and about twenty minutes to install. I picked up a 6' 1/8" stereo headphone extension cable so I could have both the stereo's USB input and aux input in the lower center console... Dunno what I'll need the aux input for, but it may come in handy. I snaked them down through the ashtray area, using the hole in the knee bolster that the ash tray light goes through. Simple way to do it and get both into the lower center console...
Anyway this is the finished install... As always, modern stereos don't look completely as home in the c900 dash, but at least this one is mostly black (albeit glossy) and the display is a reasonably low-key dot matrix display. The knobs are back illuminated with bright blue, and the screen has a purple tint to it (exaggerated in the photos), but I've seen worse.
That stereo plus a 40g IDE 2.5" drive in a USB enclosure is excellent. The enclosure is powered via the stereo's USB, so there are no additional wires to run. And no CDs or DVDs to shuffle. Just 600+ hours of music in one convenient place... Sweet.
