I have two '88 900's. The woman has the nice looking SPG. She had a clunk in the front that ended up being a disentagrating lower front a arm bushing. (One closest to the radiator). I checked for a couple of weeks for the source until I noticed the pieces of rubber hanging out of the housing.
It is not that bad to change the upper a arm bushings if you do them one at a time. (Of course I have never tried to do this with the engine or head in place. The three times I did it the engine was out or the head). Use a pry bar to line the holes up and give you the space you need. I have never wrecked a bushing. I use my cheap 20 buck vise and dish soap and lots of different size sockets and spacers.
